FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR;
Better late than never...

Hello Friends,

We hope this finds you all healthy.

Sorry this one came out past mid-month. The holidays and the volunteer nature of our support group dictates when the ezine/newsletter goes out. Members can view all back issues online in the "members" area. Have a Happy Holiday Season!

Sam and Lori

SYNSORB HALTS CLINICAL TRIALS AND
DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR TOXIN-BINDING
RESEARCH.

As you already know, Synsorb has announced they will terminate their development of Synsorb CD. That was their toxin-binding drug. The results of their development did not warrant further studies and the economy is less healthy than it has been. They have notified that they will stop sponsoring the Clostridium Difficile Support Group as of January 1. This was a major funding source for us and sometimes the only source. If any of you have any contacts of companies willing to sponsor us in trade for internet exposure - we would be grateful.

On the flip-side, GelTex has informed us that they are approaching the start of Phase 2 clinical trials in the US, Canada & UK. They are developing their own toxin-binding technology. Although they have never expressed interest in sponsorship, we have always had a prompt response from them on developments and will report to you any information that they allow us to.

IN THE PINK! (pink bismuth)

Good old pink bismuth (Pepto-Bismol to most of you) has been on the forefront of research lately. Imagine that. Something that's been around so long, something that most people have in their medicine cabinets - a possible treatment for the effects of c. diff.

More and more people are using FloraStor (S. Boulardii - a supplement for sufferers of c. diff). Right now, the two most popular supplements are FloraStor (in first place), followed by Culturelle/L. Acidophilus (in close second). As always - check with your doctor and get approval before starting any method of treatment.

I'M NOT JUST A MEMBER...

Speaking of in the pink (as opposed to "in the red, or black"); The C. Difficile Support Group established our partnership with Gloria and our new Membership program just in time! We had zero notice that Synsorb was pulling out of their development for c. difficile treatment entirely. We are able to continue running the c. diff support group with funding now - but if more people would join as Members - we may be able to completely follow through with our improvement goals of the upcoming year. Thank you sincerely to all the people who have expressed your appreciation, stuck with us through the growing pains and to those of you who have joined as members. Remember that the main site has been around for years and will continue to be updated and improved - but the Members area contains many more additional features and resources.

Here are some benefits - with more on the way:

Password to the Member's Area. Special Resource Section, statistics, facts & figures about c. diff., glossary, the database, the database report, doctor page (locate a referred doctor & top specialized hospitals), main site case history submission,  BioChoice, free shipping on certain orders and be on the Special Bulletin Notification List for immediate news on c. diff.

It's only $20 per year, or $100 for Lifetime memberships. This is likely to be the least amount of money with the highest yield of benefits you are going to see while battling c. diff. C. Difficile is an expensive battle - especially if you have limited or no health insurance.

EATING YOUR WAY TO HEALTH
- PART 2 -

By Gloria Roohr-Hyzer, N.D.
Doctor of Naturopathy - Consultant

Finally, here is the other part of the foods for the Anti-Inflammatory diet. Inflammation plays a major role in c. difficile. It is your body's way of trying to rid the bad pathogens. Here we will continue the discussion from the previous Part 1 in the last issue. As always, before making any changes in diet or treatment, get your doctor's permission first. The following are just general guidelines that are followed by many naturopathic health professionals.

Please keep in mind that all ideas here are also generalized and geared toward reducing inflammation - and not intended for each specific individual. Your special situation may dictate the need for a consultation from a medical professional and may have to be modified to meet the needs of your specific condition or allergies.

**Remember** "inflammation is the key word here". Some of these foods are good for people without specific health problems.

Legumes to include in the diet: all dried beans, peas, lentils.

Nuts and seeds to include in the diet: almonds, cashews, walnuts, sesame (tahini), sunflower, pumpkin, and nut butters made from these seeds. (Note: nuts and seeds should NOT be roasted and salted.)

Nuts and seeds to AVOID: Peanuts, pistachios, peanut butter.

Vegetables to include in the diet: raw, steamed, sautéed, juiced, or baked vegetables (except those specifically prohibited).

Vegetables to AVOID: Canned or creamed in casseroles, all nightshade family vegetables, including tomatoes, all potatoes (except yams and sweet potatoes), eggplant, red, green, and yellow bell peppers.

Fats to include in the diet: olive oil, flax seed oil, cold/expeller-pressed canola, safflower, sunflower, sesame, walnut, pumpkin, almond oil, dressings made from these oils.

Fats to AVOID: Margarine, butter, shortening, processed oils, salad dressing, spreads.

Beverages to include in the diet: at least 8 cups of filtered or distilled water per day, herbal teas.

Beverages to AVOID: Soda pop, alcoholic beverages, coffee, regular tea, all caffeinated beverages.

Spices to include in the diet: cinnamon, cumin, dill, garlic, ginger, oregano, parsley, rosemary, tarragon, thyme, turmeric.

Spices to AVOID: Cayenne pepper, paprika.

Sweeteners to include in the diet: brown rice syrup, fruit sweetener, molasses.

Sweeteners to AVOID: White or brown refined sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn, syrup, high fructose corn syrup.

Hidden sources of food allergens: Cornstarch in baking powder and processed foods, corn syrup solids or maltodextrin (corn derivative) used as a sweetner, grain vinegar in ketchup and mustard, oats or corn in amaranth and millet flake cereals.

Well, that's the end of Part 2 of "Eating Your Way to Health".  If you would like to have access to Part 1, plus all back issues of the ezine, please consider joining our Membership - your donation automatically qualifies you as a Member.

- Gloria Roohr-Hyzer, N.D.
